Definition

Open Educational Resources (OER) are “teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and repurposing by others” (William & Flora Hewlett Foundation). These free, online resources can come in a variety of formats, and include full textbooks, test banks, lecture slides, lecture recordings, lesson plans, videos, animations, interactive course modules, software, and more.

The open licenses under which these resources are released allow the OER to be adapted and edited by users who can update the material, add or remove content for their own course, or release updated versions online.
